REMS BONE DENSITOMETRY
As a new technology, OHIP does not cover the cost of this exam. Similar to physiotherapy, chiropractics, or osteopathy, this is a self-pay exam costing $150 which may be covered for reimbursement through private health plans. The benefit of self-pay is that a requisition is not required to book and receive the exam.

A New Era in Bone Densitometry
Radiofrequency Echographic Multi-Spectrometry (REMS) technology is a new method of analyzing the density of bone tissue. Unlike current bone density scanning technology (DXA), this method does not utilize ionizing radiation, allowing more frequent bone density assessments. REMS utilizes ultrasound to assess the micro-architecture of bone, providing the same information as DXA and new information concerning bone fragility.
